Coconut water has become a very popular beverage in the past few years.  Athletes and sports figures  enjoy and endorse the refreshing taste and health benefits of coconut water and this may contribute to the rise in popularity of this drink.

Coconut water is the clear liquid found in the center of young green coconuts.  It should not be confused with coconut milk which comes from the meat of the coconut.  Coconut water has a nutty sweet taste.  Many people enjoy the taste of the coconut water.  Others may mix it with plain water or tea or coffee or some other beverage.

Many athletes prefer drinking coconut water over sports drinks.  Sports drinks contain several chemicals while coconut water is all natural.

Coconut water contains five essential electrolytes.  They are calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium and sodium.  In fact, coconut water contains more potassium than eating several bananas.  Coconut water also contains high amounts of several  B-vitamins.  An 8 ounce glass of coconut water contains between 40 and 60 calories.

Sports drinks may contain more sugar than the coconut water and the sports drinks contain much less potassium then the coconut water.  However, the coconut water contains less sodium then the sports drinks.

Keeping the body hydrated is very important for health.  You can drink plain water, sports drinks, coconut water or some other beverage.

There is no rule for how much coconut water your should consume daily.  You need to take into consideration the number of calories as well as the cost of the coconut water.
