Are  you living in a home where you can no longer safely and easily navigate the stairs?  Are you considering moving from a home you love because your stairs are a problem?  Perhaps a chairlift, also known as a stairlift, is the answer to your dilemma.

If you are interested in having a stairlift installed there are several reputable manufacturers who can assist you.  They will have a representative visit your home and advise what type chairlift will work best in your home and meet your needs.

Chairlifts are available for a straight stairway or they can be designed for a curved stairway.  The straight stairway chairlift will be less expensive than a chairlift for a curved staircase.

Chairlifts are also available which are weatherproof and may be installed on an outdoor staircase.

Stairlifts are mounted on the stair treads and are very sturdy.  They are not mounted to the walls.

When using a chairlift you simply sit down, rest your feet on the platform foot rest and glide either up or down the stairs.  If you are heavier there are stairlifts which are heavy duty and have a bigger lifting capacity and a wider seat.  In addition to the seat and foot platform most chairlifts also have armrests and a seat belt.  The seat, arms and footrest can be folded out of the way when not in use.  There are remote controls so you can call the chairlift to either the top or bottom of the staircase when you need to use it.  The remote control is also useful if the person using the lift is unable to use the controls on the chair himself.

Since you are riding the chairlift with the seat at right angles to the rail you need a safe way to exit and get on the chairlift at the top of the stairs.  When  you are at the top of the stairs most stairlifts will have a seat which will swivel to allow the rider to get off and on while standing on a landing.  The seat is swiveled back and locked in place when you plan to descend from the top to the bottom of the staircase.  The chair will not move until the seat is locked in place.

Most stairlifts have battery backup so they can be used in the event of a power outage.

If the cost of a new stairlift is outside your budget look into a used stairlift.

Chairlifts are equipped with safety features.  They will automatically stop if there is an obstruction on the track and only travel away from the obstruction.  If something should go wrong, there are protective devices which will disconnect the drive power.

Stairlifts are a wonderful aid for the elderly or those who cannot move freely because of a disability or pain.  They can be the difference between remaining in your present home or moving to another residence which is all on one floor.
