Although dandruff is one of the most common scalp problems, there is no precise cause for dandruff.  Since there is no precise cause for dandruff there is no cure for the problem. However, dandruff can be treated whenever it shows.

Everyone hates the falling white flakes and the itching scalp that comes with dandruff.  People try many shampoos and treatments, both natural and chemical to get rid of the dandruff.

There are many speculations about the possible causes and there are many factors that can trigger dandruff.  It is believed that dandruff is caused by a fungus that lives on the skin of humans and feeds on skin oils.  Dandruff is a kind of Seborrheic dermatitis.  When an outbreak of dandruff happens this fungus, known as malasszria, multiplies and creates the problems in the scalp.  This fungus usually lies doormen. No one knows why it suddenly flares up and multiplies causing dandruff.

When we have dandruff the white flakes we see are skin cells.  Every month skin regenerates itself.  Every month new cells travel from the bottom of the skin layer to the top and dead cells are shed.  Since these cells are so microscopic and their quantity is small we usually don’t notice the shedding of cells.  When dandruff occurs this shedding increases and that is how these dead cells with skin oils form white flakes we can see.

There can be other causes for a dandruff flareup.  These include poor hygiene of the scalp, overuse of shampoo, under use of shampoo, stress, chemical treatments that harm the hair and scalp, etc.  For some reason in summer the incidence of dandruff is less than in winter.  It may be that less sun is causing the dandruff, however, too much sun can cause serious skin problems.

If you are having problems with an itching scalp and falling white flakes are you sure that your problem is dandruff?  If your problem Is not getting better after many washes perhaps you are suffering from something other than dandruff.

There are many scalp problems that produce scales and white flakes and itch.  One of the tough ones is psosriasis.  Psoriasis will not go away unless you see a doctor, have the problem diagnosed and treat the problem.  You can develop allergic dermatitis or irritant contact dermatitis from many cosmetic applications to the scalp.  Eczema, atopic dermatitis can also appear on the scalp.

If you have tried treating your dandruff problem and have not had any success it is time to consult your medical professional and get the proper diagnosis.  Unless a medical professional diagnoses your problem as dandruff you cannot be sure this is the problem.  Especially if the problem has not improved after many washes. Once you are sure whether the problem is either dandruff or something more severe you can take proper measures to relieve the problem.  Your medical professional will be able to guide you in a program to regain your healthy shiny scalp.
