Easy Techniques To Improve Battery Life

After they have been in use for a long period of time your battery is likely to fail.  It is a major frustration, however, when a battery fails prematurely.

Many people think they are extending battery life by turning off a device.  When you start up your device it consumes more power.  If your device is going to be switched on frequently you will not save your battery by constantly turning the device off and on.

Here are a few tips for extending battery life.

Cars and other motor vehicles

You want to protect your car battery from the high temperature under the hood by using a case or a heat shield.  Keep the battery charged at all times to extend its life.  During the hot weather season the electrolyte levels should be checked frequently.  A recent study indicated that relocating the battery outside the engine compartment increased the battery life by almost eight months.  In an effort to avoid the high temperature under the hood, some car manufacturers are relocating the starting battery to either the passenger compartment or the trunk.

It is helpful to have wet batteries vented to the outside or cells that do not produce gas when recharged.  Depending on the driving habits of each individual some batteries are undercharged.  This leads to an accumulation of the lead sulfate which reduces the battery capacity.  An external battery can be used for charging a low battery.

The most important factor to consider for any battery is the temperature.  Making sure the battery is not exposed to too much heat can extend the life of the battery.  High temperature will lead to faster chemical reactions.  The battery will need to have water added more often.  You should  use only deionized or demineralized water.  However, rain water makes a good substitute in an emergency. In addition to the more moderate temperature, a reduction in the number of discharge/charge cycles significantly improves the service life of the battery.  If you are located someplace with extremely cold climates the car battery needs to be kept fully charged continuously even when not in use.

Portable Electronic Devices

You can increase the battery life for devices such as iPods, cell phones, laptops, etc. by lowering the brightness when appropriate.  For example, if you are using these devices in a dark room it is not necessary to set the brightness to 100%.  Instead lower the brightness enough so the screen can be seen without exerting any strain on the eyes.  You can also decrease the amount of time the backlight stays on.  For iPods 2 seconds should be long enough rather than 10 seconds Laptops can be set in the hibernate mode when not in use.

Another important point is that turning down the volume will increase battery life.  Use headphones which are louder and then set the volume at 50%.

Eliminate everything that is not being used.  Background applications are power hungry monsters. Once in a while defragment the hard drive.  Decreasing file scatter on the hard drive  will decrease the power used.  To conserve the battery, have the computer go into standby mode after a certain period of inactivity.  To resume from standby mode uses some power but,  it does not use as much as starting the device.  Leaving a CD or DVD in the drive can decrease battery life since power is used whenever the drive spins up.

In Wi-Fi applications

You can prolong or increase battery life in Wi-Fi apps by increasing the battery capacity or reducing the Wi-Fi power consumption through control methods.  It is not hard to increase battery capacity.  However, due to technological limits it may lead to increased cost and size of the battery.  You can reduce the power consumption by prolonging the standby time and shortening the time of the active cycle.  It will help conserve the battery if you turn off the Wi-Fi on the iPod when not in use as this consumes a large amount of battery life,

You can improve battery life a great deal by using these techniques to lower power consumption.  These common sense usage techniques can easily become habits and become a part of your daily life routine.
