Get Rid Of Things You Don’t Use

When is the best time to get rid of the stuff taking up valuable real estate in your home.  Of course, you can get rid of clutter anytime.  However, there are times in life when it just makes sense to clean house and get rid of things you no longer use.

When you are moving from one location to another it is a good time to get rid of stuff.  Why pack and move things you no longer use, want or need.  Do you have china, silver and wine glasses for twenty and no longer entertain?  Do you have a wok and cannot remember the last time you used it?  Do you have a kitchen cupboard full of empty plastic containers – some with lids and some for which you can no longer locate the lids?

Moving is a great time to get rid of the extra china, silver and wine glasses.  There is no reason to move a wok you haven’t used in years.  Keep the plastic containers that have lids and are in sizes you use.  Get rid of the other plastic containers.

What about items in your linen closet?  Do you have frayed towels, sheets for mattress sizes you no longer own?  Do you have a bunch of old makeup and outdated medical supplies?

In the basement and garage do you have boxes you have never opened from the day you moved into this house?  Why are you keeping them?  If you have never even considered the box, how important can it be to keep the stuff?

Instead of moving all this useless stuff to your new home consider getting rid of it.  By getting rid of it I don’t mean tossing everything in the trash.  Instead, donate items to charity, take some items of value to a consignment shop to earn some cash or sell the items at an online auction, give items to a friend or family member who wants them.

When your children move out of the house is another good time to get rid of things.   You don’t need to keep the things the kids leave behind.  There is no reason for you to keep all the sports equipment the child used while growing up or all the trophies the child collected.  Instead, offer the stuff to the child and then get rid of anything he does not want to take and you do not want to keep.

After your children are grown and have moved there is no reason to keep their rooms as shrines for them.  Redecorate and use the empty rooms as a room to work on crafts, a quiet room to read or an office space for you.  Turn an empty child’s room into a nice room for guests to stay overnight.

There may come a time later in life when you decide to downsize and move from a family home to a condo or apartment.   Storage space will be limited so you will have no choice but to get rid of things you are not using.  Once again, you will find the kitchen and closets the best spaces to find stuff to eliminate.  You won’t be cooking as much so you will no longer need all your kitchen gadgets and you won’t need an excess of linens either.

Use the times of changes in your life as an opportunity to go through your stuff and get rid of items you no longer need or want.
