How To Make Beef Stew In A Crockpot

Coming home to a hot meal which is delicious and ready to eat is possible when you prepare your meal using a slow cooker or crockpot.

A very versatile easy meal to prepare in the crockpot is beef stew. The hours of slow cooking makes tender meat from an inexpensive cut of beef. Beef stew is very flavorful using chuck roast, beef stew meat or a bottom round roast. Actually, you can use most any type of beef for stew.

To make beef stew you trim the fat from the meat and cut it into approximately 2” cubes. Then you can dredge the beef cubes in flour and brown them in olive oil in a skillet. Some cooks skip the browning of the meat and simply place the cut up beef cubes into the crockpot. Either method will work fine.

In addition to the beef you want to add vegetables which have been washed and peeled and cut into chunks. The vegetables you use can be your choice. Some ideas are onion, potatoes, celery, carrots, mushrooms and parsnips Then you want to add some liquid. You can use diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, beef broth, dry onion soup and

condensed mushroom soup mixed with some water, tomato paste and red wine or whatever liquid you choose.

There are endless recipes available for making beef stew in a crockpot. If you choose to follow a recipe keep in mind you can vary any of the quantities for the meat and the vegetable variety.

A simple basic recipe for crockpot beef stew is:

1 ½ pounds of beef cut into 2” cubes

3-4 carrots

1 large onion

3- 4 potatoes

3- stalks celery

1 package fresh mushrooms either whole or sliced

1 or 2 cans diced tomatoes with juice, approximately 15 ounce cans, (if you choose you can use tomatoes that are already seasoned to your liking) Use enough liquid to cover the meat and vegetables.

Slice vegetables into chunks and place vegetables and beef in crockpot. Add diced tomatoes. Cover and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours or on high for about 4 hours. It does not matter if you cook longer.

You can use either more or less of the beef and vegetables -whatever you have on hand. If the stew is not thick enough dissolve about 3 tablespoons of cornstarch in about ½ cup of water and add this to the broth stirring till the broth thickens.

This basic recipe serves approximately 4 people.
