It Takes Exercise As Well As Dieting to Lose Weight

When they decide to lose weight, many people think about counting calories.  Counting calories has been a tried and true method of slimming down for years and years.  Everyone knows that in order to lose weight they need to take in less calories than they burn.  Just counting and cutting back on calories is not going to be enough for you to lose weight in a timely fashion.

One pound of fat is equal to 3,500 calories.  This means that in order to lose one pound we need to reduce our caloric intake by 3,500 calories.

Think of your body as a furnace that constantly needs to be supplied with fuel.  Your body is designed to keep itself alive.  Therefore, if you cut way down on calories (which supplies the fuel your body needs) your body will think you are starving and your metabolism will slow way down to preserve resources.

When you want to lose weight, you want to keep your metabolism burning high so you can burn as many calories as possible.  Cutting back on calories will help, but to lose the most weight you need to combine cutting calories with exercise.  When you include some form of exercise, especially weight training, you will ramp up your metabolism.  Muscle burns hotter than fat.  So, you are permanently speeding up your metabolism with every bit of muscle you add to your body

If you are a woman and are afraid weight training will make you bulk up like a body builder don’t worry.  The only way you are going to get bulky is if you work out every single day for several hours each day.  Not only do the women who are body builders work out strenuously, they also eat perfectly, and many take supplements to increase their bulk.

If you lift weights a few time a week you are not going to bulk up.  Instead, you will tone up and this makes you look tighter and slimmer.
Someone who is toned will appear slimmer than someone of the same height and weight who does not work out.  If you compare the metabolic rate of these two people who are not only of the same height and weight, but also the same age and gender, you will find the one working out has a higher metabolism all the time.  It does not matter if the person is sleeping or watching television, the metabolism of the person exercising is still higher than the metabolism of the couch potato.

Calorie intake is a very important part of losing weight, but if you keep this information in mind, you will see how exercise is also an important part of losing weight.  To optimize your weight loss efforts, combine your diet with some form of exercise.  In addition to more quickly losing weight, exercise will make you feel healthier and you will have more energy and will almost certainly sleep better.  Including exercise in your dieting routine will make you look better too.
