Manage Your Time When Working From Home

When you are working from home it can sometimes be very hard to manage your time.  Time passes at the same rate day in and day out, but it does not always feel that way.

When you are engaged in a task that holds your interest you might spend three hours working and think you have only spent one hour.  When you are faced with a task you deplore you may spend one hour working and feel like the task has taken three hours.  Sometimes it will be hard to gauge how long you will need to allocate to finish a project.

It takes determination and compromise to get everything done with a modicum of success each day.  Finishing your list of important tasks will sometimes feel like a major accomplishment.

Be realistic.  If you have small children in the home and a household to run, then your time devoted to work may not run as smoothly.  If would be different if you were working in some quiet office miles from home.  Working from home you will need to make certain allowances in order to achieve the balance necessary for your home and business life to both be successful. This may mean that you may have to work in shorter blocks of time at the business to allow time for the other tasks you need to accomplish in the home.

Here are a few tips for managing your time when you are working from home.  Keep in mind that no two households run the same or have the same needs.  What works for one household may be disastrous for another.  These are simply general guidelines that may fit into your lifestyle.

  1. Have a plan for the next day. Spend the last 30 minutes of work planning for the next one.  Decide how many hours you plan to work and then determine which projects are the most important to finish.  Concentrate on these tasks first.  Bear in mind that there will probably be interruptions to your workday (especially if you have young children).  You will need to work around any interruptions.  You will be better able to track your progress when you have a goal for the day in mind and make every effort to fulfill the goal.
  2. Allocate time for the tasks that need to be accomplished, but are time wasters. This can include checking emails, updating social medial pages and preforming the necessary administrative tasks.  Allocate time each day for each of these tasks.  Let any emails that come in outside the allocated time wait until your next scheduled time slot to handle these mundane items. You may also want to address your emails before ending your day so you do not have a vast number of messages to handle the first thing next morning.
  3. Determine a fixed number of working hours. This does not mean you need to have a regular 9 to 5 schedule.  If you plan to work 6 hours a day determine when the time is best for you to work these hours.  When you have put in the 6 hours then quit for the day.  Because of home responsibilities you may not be able to work your hours all at one time.  Your work hours may have to be broken up into several different increments.  In fact, you may have do some work at your business either early in the morning or later at night when your children are in bed for the night.
