Over The Counter Remedies That May Help Menopause Symptoms

As they get a little older, women experience the problem known as menopause.  For some women menopause is a horrible time with a variety of unpleasant symptoms.  Other women have very little discomfort during menopause.  Menopause does not go away overnight.  It can last for up to ten years, but your symptoms may come and go.  They may at times be severe and at other times barely noticeable.

Symptoms which may occur during menopause include hot flashes, night sweats, nausea, insomnia, anxiety, weight gain, vaginal dryness, headaches, mood swings and a possible decrease in sex drive.  For centuries, the Chinese have used several herbal remedies to help relieve the discomfort of menopause.

If you are having trouble with the symptoms of menopause you may want to try some of the herbal remedies which are available.  Most of these herbal remedies are available over the counter.  You may have to try several different remedies.  These herbal remedies come in various doses and in various combinations of the herbals.  You will need to determine which one works best for you.  It can take some time before you find the right herbal for you.  In the meantime, you must deal with your menopause symptoms as best you can.

Black Cohosh is an effective treatment for hot flashes, increased anxiety and insomnia.  It is the main ingredient found in all menopause herbal remedies.  Black Cohosh may not work very well when taken on its own.  It will work better when combined with something such as red clover.

Red Clover contains plant estrogens known as phytoestrogens.  Like estrogen found in a woman’s body, plant estrogen helps to regulate that specific hormone.  Red clover works well when taken in combination with black cohosh.  This herbal remedy may help alleviate hot flashes.

Ginseng Root may be used in menopause to relieve headaches and help promote sleep.

Dong Quai may help relieve night sweats and the anxiety many women experience during menopause.

Ginseng may help with the symptoms of anxiety, fatigue and stress.  Ginseng may be taken as tea, powder or an extract.

Agnus Castus helps the pituitary gland to balance the hormones in the body.  Agnus Castus is also known as Chaste Berry.

St John’s Wort acts as an antidepressant and may help manage your mood swings.  There may be times during menopause when your mood swings up and down and your family and friends are going crazy trying to understand what has happened to you.  St. John’s Wort may help calm you down and keep your moods more predictable and steady.

It is always a good idea to talk with your medical professional before you start any medications, even herbal remedies.

Something else that can help your menopause symptoms, especially your anxiety and hot flashes, is deep breathing.  When you feel a hot flash coming on start doing some of the deep breathing that you practice when you do yoga or meditation.

Keep in mind that menopause is not going to last forever, although it is likely to last for years.  You will need to find a solution that allows you to continue your lifestyle without too many interruptions despite the discomfort caused by your menopause symptoms.  With a positive outlook, you will be better able to handle to discomfort that is associated with menopause. sleep_stress_weight_loss
