Scrapbooking Preserves Memories

Many people realize there were few pictures taken when they were young and now they want to preserve pictures and memories for their children and grandchildren.

Families today are spread out all over the country, in fact all over the world.  One way to keep everyone up to date on what is going on in your life is to keep scrapbooks to chronicle everyday life.

Have you ever found an old album or a box of photographs with no notations about who the people are, or where or when the photos were taken? It is frustrating not to be able to know any information about the pictures and there may no longer be anyone to ask.

Scrapbooking is a great-form of self-expression.  It allows you to express yourself creatively.  It is also a great form of relaxation and enjoyment.

When you are scrapbooking take the time to journal in your albums. Journaling will provide genealogical information for future generations.  Journaling will insure that the stories of your family’s life are preserved.  Others can take their time going through the album and enjoy looking at the photographs and reading the stories and captions.  At the very least you should include identifying information with each photo including the person’s name and their relationship to the family.  It could say simply “my neighbor John Doe” or “my sister-in-law, Susan Jones”.  Include dates with your photographs too.

Your scrapbooks are not just photos, they are a history of the family to be enjoyed by future generations.  You can incorporate photographs, memorabilia and written descriptions as well as newspaper clippings, magazine articles, ticket stubs, locks of hair and pressed flowers into your album.

You can include lists of favorite television shows, favorite foods (including recipes for family favorites) thoughts about a trip that was taken or a party that was attended.  Let the children and other family members write something in the album.  Sprinkle these writings throughout the album where you have blank spaces.

You can embellish your scrapbook with ribbon, colorful graphics and other artwork.  These materials are attached to the album pages.

There are acid free, permanent pens created for scrapbooking.  These types of pens are photo safe and will not damage the surrounding photos as time passes. The pens come in black or a variety of colors.
