Some Tips To Manage A Hangover

The best way to avoid a hangover is to be careful when you are out drinking for an evening.  Sometimes this is easier said than done.  You may go out with all good intentions and then during the course of the evening, after a few drinks, you forget about your good intentions.

If you are planning an evening out which includes drinking alcohol it is a good idea to eat before you start drinking.  Alcohol on an empty stomach can become a nightmare.  Some folks think that eating fried, greasy food is the best type food to eat before drinking.  Some people also think that eating something greasy after you have been drinking will help prevent a hangover in the morning.

When you are drinking the alcohol is going to dehydrate your body.  One of the easiest ways to stay hydrated is to alternate drinking with one glass of water between each glass of alcohol.  You should also drink some water before you go out drinking and some more water after you have finished your “fun”.

When you wake up in the morning after a night of too much drinking you feel like a piece of garbage.  You may have a headache, you may have a sensitivity to light and a sensitivity to sound.  Your mouth feels like something rotten crawled into it.  Your stomach may feel upset   and you may even be vomiting.

The first thing you want to do is to brush your teeth and use some mouthwash, preferably one without alcohol.  Cleaning your mouth is not going to fix your hangover, but it may make you feel a little more like a human.

Drink some water after cleaning your mouth.  You don’t want the water to be too cold since your stomach may cramp and you may throw up.  If you can’t stand the thought of plain water try a sports drink which will have hydrate your body.  Slowly sip this first drink.  Your body is not going to handle you gulping the fluid.  Continue sipping water every hour or so during the day.

Next you want to give your body some caffeine either hot or cold.   The caffeine will help you wake up a little bit.  Limit your caffeine drinks to two or three since caffeine, like alcohol, will dehydrate your body.

Your body will thank you and you will feel more alive if you take a nice, long shower.  If you are feeling nauseous a lukewarm shower might be best, otherwise take a nice hot shower.   Just let the water cascade over you.  After you shower dress in some comfortable clothing and relax on the couch or go back to bed for a few hours.   You might even want to turn off the phone for a few hours until you feel better.

When you start feeling hungry try to eat a little something light.  Perhaps some toast with honey or some scrambled eggs.

Sometimes it will help your headache to take an over the counter pain reliever and an over the counter antacid may help your nausea.

No one likes waking up in the morning feeling like crud and regretting the night before.  If this does happen then you might find these tips helpful.  They may help lessen the suffering you are experiencing from your hangover.
