Stay Younger Longer

Everyone is going to age whether they are ready for it or not.  There are, however, some habits you can change, and some lifestyle changes you can make, in order to delay the aging process.

First, if you are a smoker you need to quit.  Smoking speeds up the aging process.  Smoking has many health risks and can lower your life expectancy.  Smoking will make you look years older than you actually are since smoking dehydrates and damages the skin.

If you want to remain younger longer you need to include regular exercise as part of your lifestyle. Exercise will help improve circulation and can lower blood pressure.  This will help keep the brain, skin and digestive systems healthy.  Cardio exercise will help strengthen your heart.  When you keep your heart and body healthy you reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke.

Try to do some strength training such as weight training twice a week.  Bones become weaker with age, so you want to keep them as strong as you can.  Weight training will help build strong bones and will help reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

When you age your sense of balance can become affected.  You can improve your balance by doing exercises such as yoga and dance.  Neuromuscular exercises will help to keep your body and brain in sync.  Often as we age we lose that communication between the two, body and brain.

It’s important to follow a healthy diet if you want to stay younger longer.  To be sure you are getting enough of the essential fatty acids, omega-3, omega-6 and DHA, eat fish twice a week Your body will stay more flexible when you consume these essential nutrients.  Fish oil is important for your blood vessels, nervous system and skin.  Fish oil helps keep your skin smooth and hydrated and helps reduce wrinkles.  Fish is great as a brain food and helps keep your mind alert and active.

A good source of antioxidants are fruits and vegetables.  Antioxidants fight free radicals and help maintain a healthy immune system.  You want to eat a wide variety of these fruits and vegetables in many different colors.  Fruits and vegetables will help you maintain a good immune system and will help fight and prevent diseases, including cancer.

For a healthy lifestyle diet, in addition to fish, and fruits and vegetables, you should include lean meat and poultry, whole grains, good fats, and low-fat dairy.

If you want to keep a more youthful appearance and keep more youthful health, then you need to maintain a healthy weight.  A healthy diet is essential to maintaining or achieving a healthy weight.  When you are overweight it puts more pressure on your joints and more stress on your heart.  Being overweight puts you at greater risk for developing health problems such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and heart disease.  It can also be a problem if you are underweight because the bones and muscles may be robbed of energy.  Being underweight may lead to early menopause and osteoporosis.  It can also damage your kidneys.

You need to keep your brain active if you want to stay younger longer.  You can exercise your brain by doing crossword puzzles, word searches, brain teasers, reading, etc.  You may prevent memory loss and mental deterioration by stimulating your brain.

Don’t discount the value of laughter.  Laughter can go a long way toward keeping you young.  Much of your appearance depends on your attitude. If you are positive and happy and laugh, then you will feel younger and will stay younger.

You cannot avoid the aging process.  But, you can take steps to stay younger longer.
