The massage therapist may also use various types of oils, creams, lotions or gels.  Each are used to serve a different purpose.  Salt may be used with the oil to remove dry skin.

Therapeutic massages are done by licensed massage therapists, physical therapists and athletic trainers.

Massage therapy is not recommended for those suffering from some medical conditions such as bleeding disorders, osteoporosis, bones weakened from cancer and those taking blood thinners.

There are approximately 80 different styles of massage therapy with a wide variety of techniques.  At the present time the Swedish massage is the most popular especially among baby boomers.  Swedish massage is based on the Western concept of anatomy and physiology rather than the Asian massage system.

The Swedish massage therapy may be slow and gentle or more vigorous and bracing.  It can be done with light rhythmic tapping strokes and soft long kneading strokes on the topmost layer of muscles.  It may also include kneading and deep circular movements.  This may be combined with movement of the joints.  The Swedish massage can relieve muscle tension and is energizing and relaxing.

The therapeutic massage should be done my a therapist who is licensed and trained to perform massage therapy.

Before beginning your massage the therapist should inquire about any health conditions or injuries you have.  You should also let the therapist know if you are pregnant.  Let him know if you have areas of pain or tightness and if you prefer a light of firm pressure.

The Swedish massage therapy session can last from 50 to 90 minutes.  The massage will warm up your muscle tissues, release tensions, promote relaxation and provide health benefits.
