What Are Ways Teachers Can Get Discounts?



Most teachers spend a good deal of their own money purchasing necessary supplies and extras for their classrooms.

Recognizing the teachers’ hard work and the fact that they do not earn a big salary, some companies offer discounts to teachers to help them stretch their money a little more.

Teachers purchase arts and craft supplies for their classroom projects. Stores such as Michaels Crafts. A.C. Moore, and Joanne Fabrics offer 15% discounts. Party City offers discounts between 10% and 20% depending on the amount of stuff you buy. You do need a signed letter on school letterhead to qualify for this discount from Party City. Some Hobby Lobby Stores offer a 10% discount.

For school supplies teachers are eligible for discounts at stores such as Office Depot, Office Max and Staples. There are instances where teachers step in to provide supplies for their students who cannot afford them. These purchases are in addition to the supplies the teachers regularly purchase for their classroom.

Big Lots has a Teacher Appreciation Day once a year when teachers receive a 10% discount on purchases. This usually happens in the Fall.

For tech savvy teachers discounts are available at the Apple Store and from Bose.


Teachers sometimes need to supply their classroom with basic supplies like sanitizing spray and wipes and facial tissues. Often the parents of the students will agree to donate these supplies to save the teacher money.

There are some funding sites available where teachers can solicit funds for classroom projects.

There are also sites where teachers can barter or trade or exchange for recycled materials.

Various book stores offer discounts to teachers. Places like Pizza Hut offer teacher discounts. Discounts are available from Fed Ex and from some rental car companies, parks, museums and hotels. Realizing teachers should be appropriately dressed, some clothing companies offer teacher discounts. Included are Talbot’s, New York & Co., and the Limited to name a few. Aerosols offers teachers’ discounts too.

Teachers should retain the receipts for any supplies they purchase for their classroom since these expenditures can be used as deductions for taxes.

At some places you will need to obtain the store’s teacher discount card. For any of these store discounts you will need to show your teacher identification card.

It never hurts to ask if a teachers’ discount is available when you are making a purchase. Discounts may be available to you at a place where you least expect it.
