Peanut butter is very popular and has been a staple in many households for years.

Peanut butter is used for sandwiches, sauces, dips, mixed in oatmeal, put on celery sticks, used as a spread on crackers and the list of uses for peanut butter goes on and on.

Peanut butter is considered by many to be a healthy food and plain natural peanut butter can be. The problem is that since peanut is so popular and mass produced it contains other substances besides peanuts to ensure a longer shelf life. When you purchase commercial peanut butter it also likely contains salt, sugar and saturated fats to enhance flavor. These added ingredients take away some of the health benefits of the peanut butter.

Natural almond butter can be a healthier alternative when you are considering a nut butter. Usually almond butter is processed without the added ingredients found in peanut butter. For this reason you will find almond butter is a little more expensive than peanut butter.

If you cannot find natural almond butter in your local supermarket you will find it at a health food store. You can the find almond butter either chunky or creamy, whichever kind you prefer.

You can make your own almond butter. Simply place raw almonds in a food processor and process for about 30 minutes scraping the sides at times. The processing will allow the oil to be released from the almonds giving the butter its smooth texture. When the almond butter is finished put it in a jar with a lid and refrigerate.

Almonds are a tree nut and some people are allergic to tree nuts so be sure you don’t have this problem. More people are allergic to peanuts than to almonds.
