Delicious Treats For The Winter Months

When you are stuck in the house during the cold snowy winter months nothing is better than indulging in a luscious treat.  Here are some suggestions for treats you can enjoy while you are curled up by the fireplace.

  1. Hot chocolate or cocoa– Combine some milk and/or cream with some organic cocoa powder, sugar and vanilla. Cook over low heat until the beverage is smooth and hot.  To be truly indulgent add some whipped cream on top.  If you don’t want to make your own cocoa there are lots of hot chocolate and cocoa mixes available.  Some of these are so easy you can just add either water or milk and microwave them.
  2. Hot apple cider – This beverage is sure to warm you up on a cold winter night. Simply heat the apple cider.  You might want to add a cinnamon stick.  If you really want to get fancy you can add some hot buttered rum to the apple cider.  Yum!
  3. Eggnog – A little eggnog is festive for a winter evening. It’s easy to purchase your eggnog already prepared.  You can get it either with or without alcohol.  If you want to make an alcoholic drink from the plain eggnog add some bourbon or rum.  Eggnog is also good with some nutmeg on top.  Adding a scoop of vanilla ice cream makes it really special.
  4. Mug cake – Making a single portion of cake in a coffee mug is a quick and easy way to have a treat. You can adjust the recipe to include cocoa or cinnamon or simply use it plain with or without the topping of your choice.  To make a cake mug combine ¼ cup flour, ¼ cup sugar, 1/8 teaspoon baking soda, and 1/8 teaspoon salt.  To this dry ingredient mixture add 3 tablespoons milk, 2 tablespoons oil, 1 tablespoon water and ¼ teaspoon vanilla.  Spray your coffee mug with cooking spray, pour in the mixed cake ingredients and microwave on high for about 2 minutes.
  5. Brownies – A warm fresh brownie is a great winter treat. You can make your brownies from scratch or use any of the numerous brownie mixes on the market.  For the most enjoyment eat the brownies warm right from the oven.  A nice glass of milk will go good with the brownie.
  6. Cinnamon buns – How about some gooey warm cinnamon buns. You can purchase already made cinnamon buns and simply heat them or you can use the refrigerator cinnamon buns and bake them.  Either is delicious.
  7. Peppermint punch – Add peppermint ice cream to ginger ale and Bailey’s Irish cream. Mix everything together with a peppermint stick.  If you want a more indulgent treat add some whipped cream to the top of the drink.
  8. Apple pie – You don’t have to get out the pie pan to make your own. Any apple pie will be fine.  Apples have a delicious sweet taste.  Simply warm your slice in the microwave for a minute or two.  It is even better when you add some caramel to the pie and then serve it with a scoop of ice cream.  Vanilla ice cream is great and strange as it may sound pumpkin ice cream works great with apple pie.  If you don’t like ice cream or caramel on your apple pie what about a slice of cheddar cheese?

Winter is on its way.  Be sure your kitchen is well stocked so you will have what you need to prepare the winter treats you want.  Hopefully one of these suggestions will help keep you cozy and warm while the weather outside is frightful.
