Forget Excuses – Time To Get Rid Of Clutter

Many of us hold onto clutter and we have various excuses why we retain this stuff.  We know having too much stuff is a real problem.  Unwanted and unneeded stuff takes up lots of storage space that could be put to a better use.  We all have various reasons why we hold onto stuff.

Some of the reasons for holding onto stuff we no longer use include:

  1. Reason for keeping clothing we have outgrown include the thought that someday the weight will be lost and the clothing will fit again. If you do lose weight it should be a time to celebrate and so you can go out and purchase some new clothing.  The old clothing you are holding onto will likely be out of fashion by the time you get around to losing weight.  Or, you may never get back to the weight where you can wear the hoarded clothing and you are wasting valuable space storing it.
  2. You are holding onto things because someone important in your life gave it to you. I’m not suggesting you get rid of everything that holds important memories for you.  However, the knick knacks and other stuff you are holding onto are not the memories you cherish they are only symbols of those memories.  Keep and display the items that are most important to you.  If you display them you can enjoy them.  If they are stuck away in storage you cannot enjoy them and may not even remember all that you are storing.  You can always take pictures of less important items and keep the pictures and dispose of the actual item.
  3. You paid a good amount of money for something and think because you spent money you need to hold onto it.   If it is an item you no longer use, like or want then get rid of it.  It is only taking up valuable real estate in your home.  Would you rather have an unwanted item or more space?
  4. You have something you are holding onto because you are trying to decide what to do with it. If you don’t know what to do with it then maybe it should go.  If you think it is worth lots of money have it appraised and then sell it.  Usually, items you think are worth lots of money are not as valuable as you think they are.  If you have an item you don’t know what to do with then you probably will not miss it if you get rid of it.
  5. You have items you may need someday.  Perhaps someday you will need it, but when the time comes will you even be able to find it among the clutter?  Most items can be easily replaced quickly so there is no real point in holding onto every little screw, nail, bag, etc.

When you decide to tackle your clutter sort items into three categories.  Those items you want to keep, those you want to donate to a charity or sell, and those items that can be trashed.  Go through your home and sort your items into the various categories.

You will not get rid of your clutter in one day, but if you work a little at a time you will be able to purge some of the clutter and regain some more space in your home.  Having a clutter free home is must less stressful than dealing with a bunch of stuff.
