The Benefits of Whey Protein

wheyerWhey is a liquid byproduct when cheese is processed.  When the milk coagulates whey is what is left over and this is removed from the cheese.  It can then be processed and dried.

Whey protein is used as a dietary supplement. It contains all the essential amino acids and is considered a complete protein.

It is thought to be helpful in increasing muscle mass and lowering the time required to recover from too much training.  It may aid with weight loss, increase the functions of the immune system, assist in cancer treatment, increase good cholesterol (HDL) and decrease total cholesterol.

There are three basic types of whey protein.  There is whey protein concentrate (WPC), whey protein isolate (WPI) and whey protein hydrolysate (WPH).  Whey protein concentrate has varying percentages of protein.  It can vary from as low as 30% protein to 90% protein.  WPC also contains low levels of lactose and fat.  It is usually the least expensive of the three types of whey protein.  The fat and lactose has been removed from whey protein isolate  (WPI) and it usually contains at least 90% protein.  Whey protein hydrolysate (WPH) is the most easily digested form of whey protein since is has undergone still further processing.  This form of whey protein is used in infant formulas and in medical protein supplements.

Most healthy people do not experience any side effects from the use of whey protein.  Some people may experience problems such as headaches, bloating, gas, fatigue or cramps.  This is especially true of those who are lactose intolerant.

There are also various types of protein powders which contain some whey protein.  These blended powders may take longer to digest.. These blended powders may contain  ingredients such as casein protein, soy protein and egg white protein in addition to the whey protein.
