The Health Benefits of Kefir

health-benefits-of-kefirKefir means feel good in Turkish and this is exactly what can happen when you drink it.  Kefir is a fermented milk product.  It resembles a creamy yogurt like drink and some folks think the plain Kefir tastes like butter milk.  Kefir is available in several fruit flavors too.

Kefir is a combination of kefir grains which are used to ferment milk. The grains are healthy bacteria and yeasts.  Any type of milk can be used to make Kefir such as cow, goat, coconut, or almond.  You can purchase Kefir from your local supermarket, your health food store, on line or you can make your own Kefir.  There are recipes available on line for making this product and the kefir grains needed to make Kefir are available for purchase.

Kefir has been around for hundreds of years, but has only started to gain popularity here recently.  As more people become aware of the many benefits of Kefir it will most likely become much more popular.  Kefir probably is a richer source of probiotics than yogurt.  It contains amino acids, essential minerals and vitamins and the yeast and helpful bacteria.

Some health benefits attributed to Kefir are an improvement in blood circulation, a boost to the immune system, protection for the prostate, help in regulating blood pressure, relieve of some  intestinal problems,  and aid for bowel movements.  It also gets rid of the bad bacteria in our systems, helps to protect against cancer, calms the nervous system and helps to slow the aging process.

Most people do not have any side effects when taking Kefir.  Some have noticed stomach discomfort or constipation when first starting on the Kefir.  It is not recommended for either pregnant women or breast feeding women since this has not been studied for safety.  Since Kefir does contain the live bacteria and live yeast it is also not recommended for anyone taking medications which will suppress the immune system.

It is always wise to consult your health care professional if you have any questions or concerns about using Kefir.
