The Pros And Cons Of Energy Drinks


With today’s hectic pace of life some people feel the need for a boost of energy to accomplish their tasks and get through the day.  The caffeine in coffee may provide this jolt of energy, but it takes time to brew a cup of coffee.  It is faster and easier to grab an energy drink to get a quick shot of energy.  The stimulus from the energy drink can last for several hours and give you the alertness you need.

There are some benefits from an energy drink.  If you are working out you may be able to workout longer and harder.  If you are trying to meet a deadline or cramming for an exam the energy drink may provide the necessary energy and alertness required to successfully complete the task.

There are also some problems associated with over use of energy drinks.  They often include high levels of sugar so can cause weight gain  This makes them off limits for those suffering from diabetes.  Energy drinks have been known to cause nervousness, allergic reactions, headaches and sleep problems.  Because of some of the side effect problems you may not be able to function as you do normally.  Energy drinks also have been the cause of some heart related problems.  In fact, many people wind up in emergency rooms each year from overuse of these drinks


Energy drinks are more a dietary supplement than simply a beverage.  Most energy drinks contain large amounts of caffeine to boost energy.  They also may contain taurine which is a type of amino acid and is said to enhance neurological functions.  If you check the label on your energy drink you may find some B vitamins said to help convert food to energy.  These drinks contain sugar too.  Various brands of energy drinks may include ginseng to relieve fatigue and/or ginkgo biloba for concentration.  There may be any number of other chemicals in an energy drink.

You should never mix an energy drink and alcohol.  The energy drink acts in your body as a stimulant while the alcohol is a depressant.  This can cause major problems to your body.

Consuming energy drinks on a daily basis may lead to an addiction to this drink which is bad for your overall health.

Energy drinks do not take the place of the need for water in your diet so be sure to continue drinking water when you use the energy drinks.

If you have health problems you are better off staying away from energy drinks.
